Professor Simisola O Akintola is a distinguished legal scholar former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ibadan and the deputy vice chancellor research innovation and strategic partnerships of the University of Nigeria. She holds an LL.B (Hons) from Obafemi Awolowo University (1987), an LL.M from the same institution (1991), another LL.M in Global Health Law from Georgetown University, Washington D.C. (2008), and a Ph.D. in Law and Bioethics from the University of Southampton, United Kingdom (2016). She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988.
Professor Akintola began her academic career at the University of Ibadan as a Lecturer in the Department of Private and Business Law, and later to Professor of Health Law in the Department of Private and Property Law. She serves as an Adjunct Professor at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nelson did Mandela University South Africa is a Faculty Member at the Centre for Bioethics, Ashi, Ibadan. She is also a co Investigator on DS-I Africa BridgElsi project.
Her research expertise spans health law and bioethics, research ethics, biobanking research, genomics in Nigeria, law and privacy, and data sharing. She has authored numerous publications, and has contributed extensively to scholarly journals on intellectual property rights in biomedical research, human rights law, and research ethics governance.
She is editor to a number of journals and reviewer to various international journals on Bioethics medical law and Public health law.
She is external examiner and assessor to numerous universities
As Dean, Professor Akintola has overseen remarkable achievements, including University of Ibadan law students winning 28 out of 38 prizes at the Nigerian Law School Bar Final Examinations in 2020. Her leadership reflects her commitment to academic excellence and the advancement of legal education in Nigeria. She is recognized as a leading authority in health law and bioethics in West Africa.
